Hundreds of mental health care beds have been lost across Australia in 2025 as private facilities close or reduce their exposure to the sector.
Many experts see the system to be near collapse at a time when more Australians than ever before are experiencing mental health illnesses.
Some argue that to restore capacity to the system, it needs not only a serious injection of funds, but a change in the way that care is provided.
State and Territory legislation provides a means by which patients may be admitted into care without their consent, and both secluded and restrained whilst they are in a care facility. These steps are seen by some to be controversial and in need of winding back, while others see them to be important steps to take for the benefit of the patient and the community where no less restrictive options are available.
We hope that you can join us for our next First Thursday Club where BN's Rob Samut will discuss involuntary treatment of mental health care patients in Australia in a system which is cracking at the seams.
