Chronic pain is a widespread issue in Australia affecting approximately 1 in 5 people across all ages, and 1 in 3 people over the age of 65. Not only does it burden sufferers personally, but it imposes significant socio-economic costs on the nation, estimated at $73.2 billion annually, with $48.3 billion attributed to lost productivity.
The historical reliance on opioids and pharmacological treatments for chronic pain has fuelled an opioid crisis in countries like Australia and the US. In Australia, this crisis results in nearly 150 hospitalisations and 14 emergency admissions daily, with three daily deaths linked to opioid use. Concerns have also arisen about the increasing use of treatments like spinal fusion surgery for chronic back pain, potentially driven more by financial motives than therapeutic considerations.
In response, the Australian Government has prioritised chronic pain as a national health policy issue, aiming to enhance access to and understanding of best practice pain management through its National Strategy Action Plan For Pain Management. This plan emphasises a multidisciplinary approach that considers biological, psychological, and social factors as essential in chronic pain treatment. Despite this policy shift, barriers remain for consumers, especially in rural and remote areas, to access such comprehensive care.
With an impressive line-up of industry experts, BN’s Sydney Health Forum will delve into the critical intersection of pain management, ethics, and the law, and unpack how we navigate these complex issues as a society in order to find a solution.
We are also excited to be joined by our keynote speaker, World Champion Ski Aerialist, Jacqui Cooper. Representing Australia in aerial skiing for over 20 years, Jacqui has experienced firsthand the physical and psychological challenges of chronic pain, its management, and treatment. Her story is one of self-belief, passion, triumph, tragedy, and the ability to overcome adversity, making her a powerful voice on the issue of pain management.
BN’s Health Forum is a must attend event for all professionals working in or alongside healthcare and life sciences who want to stay up-to-date on the trends and issues affecting the sector. But be quick, registration is free and places are limited.
Following the final session, attendees are invited to continue the conversation over drinks and canapes.
