Stephanie Carter

Steph specialises in defending litigated and unlitigated public liability, product liability and policy interpretation matters. She has practiced exclusively in insurance litigation since 2016.

Steph has extensive experience acting in matters arising under management liability policies and legal expenses policies, including as coverage counsel for large corporate insureds. She regularly provides coverage advice to insurers including guidance on the ongoing management, defence, and investigation of claims. Steph has also assisted insurers with notification and management of claims arising out of royal commissions as well as regulatory investigations and prosecutions against large corporate insureds.

Steph has completed a number of secondments with major insurers including a seven-month secondment in a casualty team where she managed a busy portfolio of personal injury and third-party property liability claims. These claims involved a variety of insureds including large construction companies, builders, aged care facilities, shopping centers, licensed premises, and homeowners. During these secondments, Steph gained invaluable insight into the commercial drivers and issues facing insurers and stakeholders.

Steph’s experience spans multiple jurisdictions including the Local, District and Supreme Courts of NSW, Victoria, Queensland, and the Australian Capital Territory. She regularly appears on behalf of insurers and insureds at directions hearings, interlocutory hearings, Informal Settlement Conferences, and Mediations.

Steph takes a clear and practical approach to managing claims. Her focus is on resolving issues quickly and effectively while keeping clients informed at every stage. She works closely with clients to simplify complex legal matters and deliver solutions that are both practical and commercially sound. Drawing on her secondment experience with major insurers, Steph understands the business realities behind every claim and achieves outcomes that balance legal risk with commercial priorities.
