Melissa Carius is a Special Counsel in our Insurance & Health Law team and is based in the Brisbane office.

Melissa has a broad range of experience in health law matters, personal injury claims and insurance law generally.

She specialises in:

  • Medical negligence claims defence
  • Coronial investigations and inquests
  • Disciplinary matters, specifically representation in OHO and AHPRA complaints
  • Workplace health and safety investigations and prosecutions

Melissa specialises in the defence of medical negligence claims, representing public and private hospitals as well as individual practitioners in the pre-litigation process and litigated claims. She assists health services and practitioners with Coronial matters, including preparation of evidence during Coronial investigations and representation at Coronial inquests, and represents medical practitioners in disciplinary matters including OHO and AHPRA complaints.

Melissa also acts for companies and directors in workplace health and safety investigations and prosecutions, and has represented a company and an individual prosecuted in relation to the death of a worker.

Alongside her role as a solicitor, Melissa has an interest in training and education, and regularly delivers educational and professional development sessions to clients. She has also contributed to our in-house podcast, The Checkup, with plain English explanations of complex legal principles and discussions on issues particular to Indigenous health.

Melissa has a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Business (Distinction), as well as a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice.
