James Meehan
Senior Associate

James specialises in medical malpractice and negligence, medical professional disciplinary matters, and public liability with a focus on personal injury claims.
James acts for public and private hospitals, as well as individual practitioners, in the defence of claims for medical negligence. He also provides advice to health practitioners in relation to disciplinary matters, including matters involving complaints made to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and Office of the Health Ombudsman (OHO). Additionally, he assists health services and practitioners with coronial matters and investigations by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
James also acts for a range of insurers and self-insured clients in relation to personal injury and property damage claims. His clients include large organisations such as mining entities, principal construction contractors, host employers, and overseas-based product manufacturers, as well as smaller businesses including retail operations and franchises. James has experience acting in multi-party claims which often involve complex liability and contribution issues.
'I find that insurance litigation provides the opportunity to navigate a variety of complex factual circumstances and technical legal issues whilst working closely with my clients to achieve the best possible legal and commercial outcome.'
James has practiced almost exclusively in insurance and health litigation since joining the profession and has completed multiple secondments in government insurer’s health claims teams. He has also undertaken pro bono work with a community legal centre, advising on capacity, guardianship, and administration matters, in addition to assisting with submissions to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
James takes a structured and proactive approach to his matters, identifying key issues early and distilling complex investigations into clear, concise advice. Combined with strong advocacy throughout the life of a claim, this enables him to guide clients through the litigation process and achieve fair, efficient, and favourable outcomes.
