Andrew Hilditch
Principal

Andrew has specialised exclusively in insurance law for over four decades, building deep expertise across personal injury, financial lines, Directors & Officers, property damage, business interruption, and construction claims.
Throughout his career, Andrew has acted across nearly every facet of insurance litigation, gaining valuable insight into the commercial considerations that underpin indemnity disputes. He predominantly acts for London-based insurers, representing them across all Australian jurisdictions.
‘I have an unusual career background in that I completed my law degree at the University of Sydney while playing cricket for New South Wales. This is something that wouldn’t be possible today, with professional athletes having to make some tough decisions very early in their careers. In my case, I loved playing cricket, but I had always wanted to be a lawyer.’
Practising in South Australia, where the legal profession is fused, Andrew has developed strong advocacy skills through regular court appearances. His ability to represent clients in both advisory and advocacy capacities, adds depth to his practice through enhancing the quality of service he delivers.
‘The thing that excites me most about Barry Nilsson is the quality of the people. We have a team of exceptional lawyers. Although we are a national practice, Barry Nilsson isn’t made up of distinct practices that have nothing in common. The culture is central to the firm, which is built around a unified vision. That culture permeates each office in a really nice way. We’re a down-to-earth and friendly firm, which our clients appreciate.’
Andrew’s approach to legal practice is grounded in clarity, responsiveness, and practical problem-solving. With a deep understanding of the insurance industry and the demands placed on claims managers, many of whom are experienced lawyers themselves, Andrew ensures his guidance is both timely and on point. He thrives on the variety and complexity of new matters, viewing each file as an opportunity to apply fresh thinking and tailored strategy to a unique scenario. Known for his prompt and pragmatic advice, he avoids overly legalistic approaches in favour of clear, solution-oriented guidance.
