Barry Nilsson's commitment to reconciliation
Barry Nilsson acknowledges the traditional owners of the land on which we work. We pay our respects to their cultures and Elders past, present and emerging.
While as a firm we have made and continue to make positive progress, we recognise that reconciliation involves Australians coming together to take collective action in driving meaningful change. For the journey to be truly successful, we must be led by First Nations peoples.
With our recently endorsed Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), we join a united front with individuals, communities and organisations to acknowledge the truth of Australia’s past and gain a deeper understanding of the steps we need to take to create a just and equitable future.
Our RAP solidifies and formalises the firm’s existing commitment towards reconciliation and sets a tangible, measurable, and actionable path forward under the leadership and guidance of First Nations peoples.
'This RAP enables BN to deepen its understanding of its sphere of influence and make a meaningful impact towards Australia’s reconciliation journey.' – RAP leadership team.
As set out in our RAP, our reconciliation initiatives are centred on three core pillars: relationships, respect, and governance. These focus areas set the foundations for our reconciliation efforts and are designed to be collaborative, enhance deeper learning, and form the benchmark for our vision and targets for reconciliation moving forward.
The driving force behind these initiatives is our desire to build stronger relationships with, and effect positive change for, Australia’s First Nations peoples. With dedicated resources now in place, including our RAP committee and First Nations partnerships, the firm is in a strong position to deepen our reconciliation footprint.
We also have a pro bono practice that enables us to use our expertise and knowledge to respond to the current unmet legal needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with a focus on increasing access to justice.
We are proud to walk together with First Nations peoples on this meaningful and impactful journey towards reconciliation.
