‘The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers’ - the famous line spoken by Dick the Butcher in Shakespeare’s, Henry VI, Part 2. Dick was part of a group of rebels led by Jack Cade, who had aspirations of creating a more egalitarian society. So far as Dick was concerned, if there was going to be some kind of ideal society, lawyers ought play no part in it.
Since that line was first delivered in 1598, lawyers have in fact flourished. But with the rise of AI and its expanding role as a source of legal advice and information, might Dick the Butcher finally get his wish, at least metaphorically speaking?
The short answer is no. The legal profession will continue to play an important role in a functioning society, albeit in an AI modified world.
It’s fair to say at this point in time that AI is increasing efficiency in routine tasks while introducing significant ethical, accuracy, and professional risks.
