More so than ever before, America is a country divided across a range of issues. Over the last 12 months, conservative politicians have been creating a further divide on the issue of medical care for gender reassignment. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green, a close confidant of Donald Trump, outlined plans recently to introduce a Bill that would criminalise doctors for providing gender affirming care to a minor.

In Australia, our social views and societal trends can often be led by events happening in the United States. As a result, we are starting to see here an anti-trans commentary in our public discourse from certain politicians and across various social media channels. A common view emerging is that it’s too easy for teenagers to decide on a whim to reassign their gender and that the healthcare industry is facilitating this.

With the rapidly evolving changes and varying opinions, we thought it was time for a fact check! Join us for our next FTC session where BN’s Rob Samut and Melissa Carius will explore what is involved for those young Australians experiencing gender dysphoria to start the process of gender reassignment. They will look at decisions in this area and also discuss legal issues associated with transgender athletes competing in organised sporting events.
