On 8 April 2025, NSW public health doctors, for the first time in the history of the State, took the unprecedented step of commencing strike action. In walking off the job, they defied a directive from the NSW Department of Health warning them not to do so.

The doctors’ primary concerns are pay, unsafe hours and chronic staffing shortages.

The strike action highlighted what the doctors saw to be systemic issues of overworked and fatigued doctors, leading to burnout and impacting patient care. The NSW industrial action is similar to that taken by English public health doctors in 2024.

Fatigue in the medical profession is a serious issue as it leads to:

  • Decreased performance and a higher potential for medical errors
  • Burnout and compassion fatigue
  • Claims and complaints being made against medical professionals
  • Increased absenteeism and staff turnover

And it's not just a NSW issue!

We hope that you can join BN's Rob Samut for the next First Thursday Club session on fatigue and burnout in the medical profession.
